'Get Screened' video contest throws a spotlight on the importance of colorectal-cancer screening

Get Screened Video Contest
SEATTLE - October 27, 2008 - Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center today announced a video contest called "Get Screened" - a creative challenge to movie makers to help shine a spotlight on the importance of colorectal-cancer screening. The contest is part of the Hutchinson Center's ongoing awareness campaign - Your colon. Your life. Your call. - to increase colon-cancer screening rates and reduce deaths from the disease in Washington state.

Colon cancer is the third most-commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States. An estimated 49,960 Americans, including 940 Washington state residents, will die of the disease this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

"Most of these deaths could be prevented if the disease were caught early. We're launching this video contest to help increase awareness about the importance of early detection and motivate people to get screened," said Lee Hartwell, Ph.D., president and director of the Hutchinson Center.

The contest is open to movie makers age 18 and older. Film or video submissions must be either 30 seconds or 60 seconds in length and can be in any style or genre, including animation, drama, still art, imagery, comedy or documentary. Entries will be judged on five criteria: originality, creativity, concept, information and overall presentation. All entries are due by Jan. 15, 2009.

The top 15 entries will be posted to YouTube.com in February and the public will be allowed to view each finalist's submission and to post comments. Each finalist will be evaluated by a panel of celebrity judges.

In mid-March five winning entries will be announced: one grand prize ($2,500), two first-runners-up ($1,000) and two second-runners-up ($500). The winning videos and finalists will also be posted on the campaign Web site and be screened at a public event.

James Westby's "The Auteur" To Premiere at Cinema 21

Posted 10/30/08

Portland, Ore. - (October 30, 2008) Portland director and screenwriter James Westby's latest movie, The Auteur, is scheduled to make its Portland debut December 5th - 11th at Cinema 21. Since premiering at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, the film has garnered worldwide acclaim at the Athens (Greece) International Film Festival and London's Raindance Film Festival. Variety magazine and Vanity Fair have hailed the film as a "sharp and human-scaled comedy" and "not only laugh-out-loud funny, but also intelligent," respectively.

The film has also become an underground hit on YouTube as clips of the film have garnered more than 7 million views, and at one time was the most-viewed entry on the popular website. Additionally, the film has been selected by numerous upcoming national and international film festivals including the Victoria Film Festival, Torino Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the Chicago Underground Film Festival.

Filmed entirely in and around Portland, The Auteur follows the larger-than-life adult filmmaker Arturo Domingo (Melik Melkasian) as he navigates the nexus of a creative and personal midlife crisis. While running into irreverent fans, counter-culture types, and even Ron Jeremy, the film is at once a raunchy comedy and an intimate portrait of a man in search of his soul.

With outstanding performances by Malkasian (Film Geek), Katherine Flynn (daughter of Jane Seymour), John Breen (Untraceable), and Cara Seymour (Gangs of New York, Hotel Rwanda), The Auteur also boasts incredible visual design with cinematography by Alan Jacobsen (The Trials of Daryl Hunt) and production design by David Storm (Don't Come A Knockin', Northfork).

The energy and excitement of the Pacific Northwest is truly brought to screen with the support of a soundtrack and original score from local artists. Fans from beyond the region can look forward to national Portland acts including The Decemberists, The Shaky Hands, Norfolk and Western, MarchFourth Marching Band, Laura Gibson, Copy, and many more are joined by a score composed and recorded by Portlander Jason Wells. "SELFLESS" Wins Big at Bend Film Festival

    Posted 10/15/2008

SELFLESS, a feature film made by Portland's Pander Brothers (Jacob, Director and Arnold, Producer) had its World Premiere last week at the prestigious Bend Film Festival in Bend, Oregon, winning 4 of the top awards. It stars Hollywood-based Mo Gallini (Crimson Tide, End of Days, 2 Fast 2 Furious, CSI Miami, NCIS), and Joshua Rengert, Jen Hong, and October Moore all of Portland.

    BEND FILM FESTIVAL 2008 WINNERS:
  • Best Feature: SELFLESS
  • Best Supporting Actor: Mo Gallini, SELFLESS
  • Best Screenplay: SELFLESS
  • Best Editing: SELFLESS

  • HISTORY
From Jan through April 2006, SELFLESS was shot in Portland by the Pander Brothers (Jacob and Arnold) with a mostly Oregon based cast and crew.

Believing in the efficacy of their creative endeavor - the excellent performances, spot-on cinematography, haunting theme music with cameos from Dandy Warhols, Storm Large, and Pink Martini, seamless sound work and special effects, a dazzling animation sequence, and even some great laughs (comic relief from the film's tension), Jacob and Arnold (with insightful criticism from mentors and colleagues, and assists from specific cast and crew members) have worked on the film almost non stop - refining it with relentless edits that didn't always come easy.

    ABOUT THE FILM
SELFLESS deals with classical, timeless, psychological themes of greed, selfishness, egotism, ambition, fear, and paranoia versus the equally timeless, human themes of a need for a strong personal and professional identity, self-esteem, hope, love, family, community, trust, and a strong sense of place. Using contemporary themes of ID theft, the new and growing creative class, innovative green architecture, and smuggling of drugs and humans for profit, SELFLESS pulls us through a labyrinth of heightened emotions from its highly charged beginning to its shocking ending.

Oregon Film and Video Industry Shows Big Gains

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Governor's Office of Film & Television
    (503) 229-5832

A just released economic report illustrates the major impact that the Film and Video Industry has on the Oregon economy. Commissioned by the Governor's Office of Film & Television the study shows the industry generated $1.39B of combined direct and indirect economic impact, representing a 41% increase over 2005. The direct industry impact was $709M, representing an increase of 43%. The greatest increase was the out-of-state spending in Oregon with a 117% increase, and representing over $41.3M in direct spending for the state. According to ECONorthwest, "Out-of-state film and video production reversed the decline it experienced between 2002 and 2005, with growth over the last two years that have left the economic impacts associated with this sector well above 2002 levels."

The study further shows that more than 13,330 people are employed in jobs supporting the film and video industry and earned an average annual wage 34% higher than the state average. "On a statewide basis, the film and video industry exhibited strong linkages (i.e., sizeable multiplier effects) to other sectors of the Oregon economy. With a job multiplier of 2.11, every 10 jobs in the film and video industry are associated with 11.1 jobs in other industry sectors in the state."

Films that recently shot in Oregon, and employed Oregon crew include: Without a Paddle II, The Road, Twilight, Burning Plain, Calvin Marshall, Management and Untraceable.
