Call for Entries: Japan Wildlife Film Festival 2009

Posted 12/1/08

The ninth Japan Wildlife Film Festival takes place over four days in Toyama from August 20th to 23rd, 2009.

Established in 1993, the Festival is held biennially.
It started in the hope that by screening moving images of the wonders of wildlife and the co-existence of nature and people, we could help to increase understanding and awareness of the urgent need to protect and care for the natural world. With your cooperation, the festival is now in its 16th year.

For the last Festival we received 334entries from 40 countries and 40,000 people, including school children, attended the public screenings staged throughout the Toyama region. International filmmakers and broadcasters and the Japanese public now know the Festival as one of the biggest of its kind in Asia.

With the film competition as its focus, we also hosts seminars by scientists and filmmakers and support active international exchanges among filmmakers and broadcasters trusting they may lead to new co-productions and distribution opportunities.

We very much look forward to receiving your wonderful films and welcoming you to the Festival.

Enter the Drive Less Video Challenge for prizes!for prizes!

Here's your chance to get into the director's chair to see your creation on TV and win prizes, including $3,000! Enter the Drive Less Video Challenge!

The objective? Create a 25 second video that motivates people to drive less. The angles to play on are nearly endless. Poke fun at excessive driving. Bring to view the toll traffic congestion takes on us, our wallets and the planet. Promote other ways to get around like transit, carpooling and biking. You get to choose!

The top video will run as a TV commercial, plus the grand prize winner will receive an Apple iMac and Final Cut Pro Studio 2 or $3,000 cash. Prizes will also be awarded to the winners of the competition's People's Choice Award.

Oregon and SW Washington residents can compete in either two categories: a General Category (ages 18 and up) and a Youth Category (ages 17 and younger). Both individuals and groups can enter. The video submission deadline is Jan. 30, 2009.

Judging:
A panel of judges will pick the top five videos in each category. The selected videos will be scored on a scale of 1 to 10 for message effectiveness, representation of the Drive Less/Save More Campaign, creativity and innovation and video quality.

But who wins isn't just up to our judges! The general public will get to weigh in, too, by voting online in March 2009 for the video in each category that motivates them to drive less.

Winner Selection:
The grand prize winner of the Drive Less Video Challenge will be determined by combining the judges' scores with public votes. The top three winners of the People's Choice Award for both the General and Youth Categories will be determined by public votes received.

All winners will receive prizes.

Entrepreneurial Development

The Office of Entrepreneurial Development is currently expanding the online Small Business Classroom to create a more comprehensive learning portal - offering courses, workshops, learning tools, information resources and other forms of online technical assistance. The new learning site will take on a new look as the agency’s entire web site is refreshed.

SBA’s current technical assistance programs touch approximately 1.4 million clients annually, most often in face-to-face settings. And, although this is a very large number of clients, it represents only a small percentage of the some 25 million small businesses in this country. When looking to increase the number of clients we serve, we must remember that not all small business owners are within a close proximity to an SBA resource location. In addition, increasingly many potential clients want only to access government services at their convenience, anytime and anywhere.

The new learning site is designed to expand SBA’s electronic dimension and reach more clients more efficiently. It is, however, intended to be part of a balanced approach, such that our expanded online training services will complement and support traditional training initiatives. As such, our online services will be integrated with and leverage our face-to-face training capabilities.

A key component of the expanded site will be the availability of “niche” virtual workshops that are industry specific and meet the day to day needs of small businesses. These events will feature “streamed” presentations from industry experts, live online small business forums and other online educational workshops.
